King Leopold’s ghost

King Leopold’s ghost is a book I read some time ago, and is one of the most interesting books I’ve read in my entire life. It’s a historical novel, that’s why the author spent ten years searching public files in order to find useful information.
This book recounts how Leopold II, king of the new-born state of Belgium, tried to make his country politically influent by gaining a colony at the end of the XIXth century. At that time, the most powerful European countries like France, Great Britain and even Germany had their own colonies. However the Belgian people weren’t very interested in having a colony so the king tried to purchase a colony with his own money. In 1885, thanks to Henry Stanley, a famous explorer, he gained the possession of a huge territory in Central Africa, the Congo Free State, a land 76 times bigger than Belgium with abounding natural resources like ivory, rubber and gold. The only problem is that in a land as big as the Congo there weren’t enough men in Belgium to extract all these natural resources. The only possible issue was to exploit the local inhabitants. Thanks to his private army, the Force Publique, he established a system of forced labor where the people were mistreated and lived in slavery conditions.

That’s the whole interesting part of the book: the different accounts given by the Congolese people give us a precise description of slavery conditions set by King Leopold. The truth can be shocking: for instance, every Congolese man who didn’t want to extract rubber had his hands cut off. Moreover sometimes the army kidnapped wives and children: the only way for a man to see his wife and kids again was to go and work. Men and women were constantly flogged.  Some Belgian soldiers were paid according to the number of hands they cut a day.
Eventually the other European countries noticed these abusive exploitations and forced King Leopold to stop and he had to cede his domain to the Belgian government in 1907.
According to the author, from 1885 to 1907 the death toll in the colony approaches ten million victims, which is even more than the holocaust. Of course, we will never know if this number is true or not. We can consider this period as a genocide carried out by Leopold II.
The reason I really enjoyed reading this book is that it opened my mind to a historical fact never mentioned in our history program and totally forgotten. In this book, the “bad guys” are the Belgian but in French colonies such as Algeria the same thing probably happened and I think that we should face the truth and start talking about it.

I was thinking about this the other day. I was walking to work and I wanted to listen to __________ so I popped into this Radio Shack to _______________. I found this cute little green radio for 4 dollars and 99 cents. I was standing there ____________ to buy this radio and I wondering how $4.99 could possibly capture the costs of making this radio and getting it to my hands. The ___________ was probably mined in South Africa, the ___________ was probably drilled in Iraq, the _____________ were probably produced in China, and maybe the whole thing was assembled by some 15 year old in a maquiladora  in Mexico. $4.99 wouldn’t even pay the __________ for the shelf space it occupied until I came along, let alone part of the staff guy’s _____________ that helped me pick it out, or the multiple ocean cruises and truck rides pieces of this radio went on. That’s how I realized, I didn’t pay for the radio.

phantasmal poison frog

This little frog looks funny, but she is one of the most dangerous frogs in the world !
This small yellowish frog isn’t the one that turns into a handsome prince on kissing. With a deadly black tongue that can extend up to 4 metres and an extremely toxic skin, she just could kill you. This tiny creature is native from Central and South America.
It’s really incredible that a cute little animal could be so dangerous for your life ! This frog is called a “phantasmal poison frog” an endangered species.

She and lots of other frogs have been bred at an aquarium in the south of England.

Let’s hope they don’t escape

Descover Wesley Sneijder

Today I’ve decided to write an article. I’ve chosen to talk about a famous football player: Wesley Sneijder.
Short Biography

Wesley Sneijder is a Dutch football player. He was born on 9th june 1984 in Utrecht into a football family. In fact, his father was a player in National Dutchland Team. Moreover his younger brother Rodney played for the youth academy of AFC Ajax. So in a favourable environment Sneijder began his career in 2002 in AFC Ajax like his brother.
In 2007, Real Madrid, a famous team, bought Sneijder to Ajax for € 27 million!

Sneijder said, "Real Madrid wanted him and Rodney (his young brother) was very happy about that. But when I heard it, I stopped the discussions. I am not in favour of juniors increasingly going to top clubs. I've told him that he first should make a break”.

On 3rd August 2008, Sneijder was stretchered off in the pre-season at Arsenal with a suspected cruciate ligament injury after a collision with Abou Diaby (a French player).
After this, Sneijder became less performing, so on 27th August 2009, Sneijder was bought by Internazionale (Inter Milan) from Real Madrid for a reported fee of €15 million.
Nevertheless in Internazionale Sneijder woke up and became one on the best player in his team and as a consequence one on the best attacking midfielder in World.

In 2010, he plays the World cup with the Dutchland team but he lost in final against Spain!
Nevertheless, he’s one of the best free kicker on Earth.
Besides, he’s a very smart player and has lots of skills. He has too many qualities specially for the free kick. Also, he puts a goal in “money time” (it’s to put goals in the last minutes of the game and it’s interesting to have such a player in a team). And in exclusivity for your blog I’ve chosen to take a video which represents the best player but that’s my opinion!

Bad Girls

There are bad girls and there are the girls of the jail of Larkhall. This series was created in 1999 by Ann Mac Manus,Eleein Gallagher and Maureen Chadwick. This TV show didn't have a really big succes because of the subject. But some people who really work in a prison says that this TV show was the most realist TV show on this subject.

The story: we follow lives of the condemned but also their guards. The series highlights the difficulties of life in a prison for women. She does not hesitate to address a number of controversial topics such as the fact that the British authorities continue to use male guards in women's wings or the trauma of separation from their children even if the children were born in the jail. There are a lot of conflicts between the womens and the guards. When you begin to wath this TV show, it's a little bit hard because you can not attach to the characters because they leave or they die, commit suicide ...

The series was filmed in a real prison so it makes things even more realistic. I chose to talk about this TV show because this really great and that makes me understand the real life for these womens who are in prison.

Corsica

During my All-Saints vacation I spent a week traveling through Corsica. I had many pleasant surprises.
The scenery was fantastic. In the lower altitudes it's mostly bush land but in the hills there are forests of taller pine trees. We could often see the ocean and snow covered mountains in the same view.    The ocean is very beautiful. The water is very clear.  On a boat trip we could see the seafloor through many meters of water.

The Corsicans love their land and take care of it. There is no garbage on the ground.
All along the coast there are many small, isolated, beautiful bays. The only way to get to them is by boat that is why in all the towns there are many sailboats at dock.
All along the coast you can see some of the nine hundred watch towers dating from the period when Corsica was often attacked by pirates.
I walked on some of the GR20 footpath. It is a famous track that crosses all Corsica. The walk was very difficult but the scenery was very rewarding.

I went to Bonifacio which is on the extreme southern coast. From there we could see Sardinia very well, only nine kilometers away (six miles). The city is built on a huge limestone cliff.   There is a huge stairway carved into the cliff that goes from the city down to the water.   Legend says that King Louis of Aragon possessed all of Corsica except Bonifacio.  He laid siege to the fortified city.  Before their resistance he decided to build a stairway on the cliff to climb up the wall to the city in one night!  In the morning when they were two meters from the city some ladies heard the picks and sounded the alarm.  But in reality it was built by the Bonifaciens to have access to the fresh water spring next to the ocean.
It was a wonderful trip on a wonderful island.  I'm so glad about all I did but there are surely many more things to discover there.
